GRAPEFRUIT

Fun Fact!

The forbidden fruit: The grapefruit has been described as ‘the forbidden fruit’, as it was believed to be linked to the original tree of good and evil in the Garden of Eden.

Discovered in 1750 on Barbados, the grapefruit, which is thought to be a hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange, was not cold-pressed for oil until quite recently. The grapefruit is believed by botanists to be a happy mistake, originating from the combination of the pomelo (citrus grandis) and the sweet orange (citrus sinesis).

Grapefruit Essential Oil was quickly used for its healing benefits. In fact, it was first discovered to be an excellent antiseptic wash for sore throats and skin blemishes. Unlike other members of the citrus family, many of which have been used in medicine for many centuries, grapefruit is a relative newcomer to the world of aromatherapy. Despite this, it is already making its mark, and has a wide number of both mental and physical applications. Similar to other citrus oils, grapefruit oil can have phototoxic qualities due to the presence of furocoumarins in the oil, and is only recommended for topical use when steam-distilled to avoid adverse effects in direct sunlight. However, cold-pressed grapefruit oil can still have a great number of benefits when diffused or used around the home.

Light and fresh, this uplifting citrus essential oil is rejuvenating for both the mind and the emotions. Grapefruit awakens and encourages smoother-looking skin as it is a natural astringent. Similar to lemon essential oil, grapefruit essential oil is cold-pressed from grapefruit peel. This bright, citrusy oil has been traditionally used to boost energy levels with its uplifting and cleansing aroma. Grapefruit essential oil is not thought to interfere with medications in the same way as eating grapefruit, but it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before using.
